Steps to Take Before Starting a Business
The internet is full of resources about what to do once you have started a business: get an accounting system, make sure you have contracts, and protect intellectual property. But what about the work before you launch? Before the logo, before you form the LLC, and before you sell your first product, there is a great deal of background work and research to do.
1. Search your name
If you have a business name in mind, put it into a search engine and see what comes up. You may find close matches that take you back to the drawing board, but that is better than finding out after you have invested significantly in that name.
2. Market research
Ask whether people need your product or service, what competitors charge, and where future clients search. Research is not for copying or negative comparisons; it is to give you the context to make informed choices.
3. Create a budget and list of expenses
List everything you will need to purchase to run the business: software, packaging, contractors, courses, and more. It can be helpful to separate a practical list from a wish list. Understanding the costs helps with revenue projections, financial goals, and the continued well-being of the company.
4. Think about your customer experience
Pretend you are a future client. List the entire experience, from how the client finds your business and contacts you to how they purchase your products or services. This becomes a useful roadmap for the tools and touchpoints your business will need.
5. Licenses, insurance, sales tax, and more
Certain businesses are required to have licenses, charge sales tax, or carry specific types of insurance. It can be a worthwhile investment to work with a professional who understands the requirements in your industry.
Arm yourself with the tools. It is a lot to grasp, but the preparation can make the eventual launch feel more grounded.
